Chief Learning Officer Magazine Editor’s Choice Award for Leadership Commitment 2015
Vi's Award-winning Leadership and Training Programs Help Employees Work and Grow
For a fifth year in a row, Vi has been awarded the LearningElite designation by Chief Learning Officer magazine. The award recognizes Vi’s excellence in learning and development programs for its employees. Vi was also awarded the Editor’s Choice Award for Leadership Commitment to employee learning and development.

“Vi is very proud to be recognized among hundreds of applicants and a select number of organizations that demonstrate strong performance and commitment towards employee training and development,” said Judy Whitcomb, senior vice president, human resources and learning. “This designation validates that the investments the Company is making to develop our employees’ leadership capabilities are paying off.”

Vi jumped from No. 19 last year to No. 7 overall in 2015, joining the ranks of top large companies such Qualcomm, Vanguard, Hilton Worldwide and KPMG.

“The remarkable thing about their placement is that I don’t think we’ve ever had a company as small as Vi in the top ten,” said Sarah Kimmel, director of research and advisory services, Chief Learning Officer Magazine. “We were so thrilled that they are showing that even smaller organizations can make the same kind of impact. It’s not all about scale and size – it’s about a passion for learning and the commitment of leadership to developing their people.”

The cornerstone of Vi’s learning strategy is to provide training and development opportunities to build capability and performance throughout the entire organization. “Whether it is putting in place certification programs for housekeeping, engineering and culinary leaders, or offering free continuing education programs to Vi’s nursing staff through the Company’s online university, E-Campus, the goals are to build institutional learning, organizational performance and to attract and retain high-caliber talent,” said Whitcomb.

One of Vi’s most successful programs is the Company’s Management Development Program for frontline employees.  Over the years, over 500 employees have participated in this one year program.  “Not only has Vi’s MDP Program been a springboard for staff progression, the program has contributed to high employee satisfaction scores for training and development and more importantly, to one of the lowest attrition rates in the senior-living industry,” said Whitcomb.

Karie Smart is a Vi employee whose career progression has been impacted by Vi’s dedication to professional growth. She first leveraged Vi’s tuition reimbursement program to attend nursing school and graduated with her RN degree in 2007. In 2011, she was a participant in Vi’s Management Development Program and by 2014 had been promoted to Assistant Director of Nursing at Vi at Lakeside Village. She is continuing her professional development by participating in Vi’s Nurse Leader and Breakthrough Leadership Programs. “Karie is a shining example of a highly-engaged, motivated learner who continues to look for ways to develop her nursing as well as leadership skills,” said Whitcomb.

The LearningElite program is based upon five dimensions: learning strategy, leadership commitment, learning execution, internal learning impact and external business performance results.

The 2015 LearningElite recipients were honored April 12, during a gala dinner celebration.  Vi will be featured in the June 2015 issue of Chief Learning Officer magazine.
